Protein has become one of those wellness topics where everybody seems to have a number.
Eat 50 grams. Eat 100 grams. Eat your body weight in grams. Double it. Add a shake. Add another shake.
No wonder people are confused.
Here's the more useful answer:
There is no single magic protein number that is right for every woman.
Your body size, age, activity, goals, overall diet and health all matter. And it helps to understand that a basic dietary recommendation and an intake being studied for strength or muscle-building goals are answering different questions.
Protein is essential to tissues and processes throughout your body.
Among other jobs, dietary protein provides amino acids your body uses to build and maintain tissues, including muscle. That becomes especially relevant when we talk about strength training, maintaining muscle as we age, recovering from exercise and simply staying physically capable.
But more is not automatically better.
The useful question isn't:
"What is the highest protein number I can hit?"
It's:
"What am I trying to support?"
For healthy adults, the current Recommended Dietary Allowance—or RDA—for protein is:
0.8 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight per day.
The RDA is a population-level reference amount designed to meet the nutrient needs of nearly all healthy people in a particular group.
It is not a ceiling. And it is not necessarily the same thing as a target someone might use when actively resistance training or pursuing a specific body-composition or performance goal.
First convert pounds to kilograms:
Body weight in pounds ÷ 2.2 = kilograms
Then:
kilograms × 0.8 = the adult protein RDA in grams per day
For example, someone weighing about 150 pounds weighs approximately 68 kilograms.
68 × 0.8 = about 54 grams of protein per day.
That gives you a reference point—not a personalized prescription.
Because researchers often study protein intake in a completely different context.
For example:
What amount of protein may best support adaptations when someone is consistently doing resistance training?
That is not the same question as:
What is the general dietary reference amount for a healthy adult?
A large systematic review and meta-analysis examining protein supplementation during resistance training found that additional protein supported gains in muscle mass and strength, with the estimated benefit for gains in fat-free mass leveling off around 1.6 g/kg/day on average.
That number gets repeated all over social media.
But here is the part that often disappears from the headline:
1.6 g/kg/day is not a universal protein prescription for every woman.
It came from research involving healthy adults participating in resistance training. It is much more useful to think of it as research informing a particular goal—not as a new RDA everyone suddenly needs to follow.

The basic dietary recommendation and an intake being studied for optimizing adaptation to resistance training are not necessarily supposed to be identical.
Ask first:
What are you trying to support?
Basic nutrition? Strength training? Building muscle? Preserving muscle?
Your goal and individual situation matter.
Two women can be the same age and have very different needs and goals.
Think about:
This is why a random number from social media can be misleading. It may be perfectly reasonable in one situation and completely unnecessary in another.
One of the easiest ways to make protein more manageable is to stop thinking only about the final daily number.
Look at your meals. Ask:
"Where is the protein here?"
Breakfast might include eggs, Greek yogurt or cottage cheese. Lunch might include chicken, fish, beans, lentils, tofu or another protein-rich food. Dinner may include many of those same foods. Snacks can contribute too.
You don't need to turn every bite into an equation. Simply noticing whether protein regularly appears throughout your day is a very practical place to begin.
Protein does not have to come from a powder.
There are plenty of protein-rich foods. At the same time, convenience matters in real life. A protein shake or other convenient protein food can be useful when you are rushed, traveling, not very hungry or simply need an easier option.
The presence of protein on the front of a package, however, doesn't tell you everything about the product.
Look at:
If you use packaged protein products or supplements, learning to read the entire label matters.
Instead of relying on an influencer's favorite number, you can start with the USDA DRI Calculator.
It uses Dietary Reference Intake data and factors such as age, sex, height, weight and activity information to estimate nutrient recommendations. It is still a reference tool—not individualized medical or nutrition care—but it gives you a much more grounded starting point.

I don't think women need to be afraid of protein.
I also don't think we need to turn eating into a full-time math assignment.
What matters more is understanding why protein matters, knowing what you are trying to support, eating a balanced diet and giving your muscles a reason to stay strong.
Protein and strength training make much more sense when we talk about them together.
For healthy adults, 0.8 g/kg/day is the current protein RDA and a useful reference point.
If you are active or resistance training, research has examined higher protein intakes because the goal is different. That does not mean every woman needs the same higher number.
Start with the question:
What am I trying to support?
Then build from there.
