How to Read a Supplement Label (Without Getting Fooled)

7 things to check before you believe the front of the bottle

Supplement bottles are very good at getting your attention.

ENERGY.
GLOW.
IMMUNE SUPPORT.
HEALTHY AGING.
HIGH POTENCY.

The front of the package is where the marketing lives.

The back is where I start asking questions.

A supplement label cannot tell you everything about whether a product is right for you, but learning how to read one can help you compare products, spot missing information and make much more informed decisions.

Here are the seven things I look at first.

1. Start With the Serving Size

Before looking at a single impressive number, check:

Serving Size

This sounds obvious, but it is one of the easiest things to miss.

A bottle may contain 60 capsules, but the serving size could be:

  • 1 capsule
  • 2 capsules
  • 3 capsules
  • several gummies
  • one scoop
  • two scoops

The amounts in the Supplement Facts panel generally refer to the amount per serving, not automatically per capsule, gummy or scoop.

So if the label says:

Magnesium — 200 mg

but the serving size is 2 capsules, that 200 mg refers to the two-capsule serving.

This is why I always start at the top.

Before deciding whether an amount looks impressive, I want to know:

How much of this product do I actually have to take to get that amount?

Also remember: the serving size on the bottle is the manufacturer's suggested serving. It is not automatically the right amount for every individual.

2. Look at the Actual Amount—Not Just the Ingredient Name

Once you know the serving size, look at how much of each dietary ingredient the serving actually provides.

Amounts may be listed in units such as:

  • grams (g)
  • milligrams (mg)
  • micrograms (mcg)
  • international units (IU), where applicable

The ingredient name by itself tells you very little.

"Vitamin D."

"Magnesium."

"Collagen."

"Probiotic."

Those words may sound useful, but the useful question is:

How much?

And sometimes:

What form?

Two products can feature the same ingredient in giant letters on the front and provide very different amounts or forms on the back.

Do not compare products by front-label buzzwords.

Compare what is actually being provided per serving.

3. Understand What % Daily Value Does—and Does Not—Tell You

For nutrients with an established Daily Value, the Supplement Facts panel may also show:

% Daily Value or %DV

This tells you how much one serving contributes relative to the Daily Value established for that nutrient.

It is a useful reference.

It is not a product score.

A product showing 300% of the Daily Value is not automatically three times "better" than one showing 100%.

More is not always better.

And some dietary ingredients do not have an established Daily Value at all.

In those cases, you may see a symbol or statement such as:

Daily Value not established.

That does not automatically mean the ingredient is good, bad, effective or ineffective.

It simply means there is no established Daily Value for that ingredient.

4. Pay Attention to Proprietary Blends

A proprietary blend is a group of dietary ingredients listed together under a blend name.

Under FDA labeling rules, the label generally provides the total weight of the blend and lists the blend ingredients in descending order by weight, but it does not necessarily disclose the individual amount of every ingredient within that blend.

That can make comparison harder.

For example:

Focus & Energy Blend — 800 mg

followed by several ingredients.

You know the blend totals 800 mg.

You may not know exactly how much of each individual ingredient is included.

That does not automatically make a proprietary blend bad.

But it does make the formula less transparent.

If the amount of a particular ingredient matters to me, I prefer being able to see how much of that ingredient I am actually getting.

A proprietary blend may tell me what is present.

It may not tell me enough to know whether the amount matches what was used in relevant research.

That is an important distinction.

5. Read the "Other Ingredients" Too

Do not stop when the Supplement Facts box ends.

Look for:

Other Ingredients

This is where you may find ingredients used for manufacturing, texture, flavor, appearance or delivery of the product.

Examples can include:

  • capsule materials
  • binders
  • fillers
  • stabilizers
  • preservatives
  • sweeteners
  • flavors
  • colors

The presence of "other ingredients" does not automatically mean something is wrong with the product.

A capsule has to be made from something.

A flavored powder usually needs ingredients that create flavor and texture.

The point is simply to know what is there.

This section can be particularly useful if you have:

  • food allergies
  • ingredient sensitivities
  • dietary restrictions
  • preferences about sweeteners, colors or other additives

The front of the bottle may say "clean."

The ingredient list tells you what that actually means in the product.

6. Know the Difference Between a Claim and Proof

This is a big one.

Supplement labels may contain what are called structure/function claims.

Examples might sound like:

  • supports immune function
  • supports healthy bones
  • supports energy metabolism
  • helps maintain digestive health

These types of claims are different from claims that a product diagnoses, treats, cures or prevents a disease.

Under current FDA rules, structure/function claims on dietary supplements are not pre-approved by FDA before they appear on the market.

Manufacturers making these claims are responsible for having substantiation that the claim is truthful and not misleading, must notify FDA after first marketing the product with the claim, and the label must include the required FDA disclaimer.

You have probably seen wording similar to:

This statement has not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration.

The important consumer lesson is:

A legal label claim is not the same thing as proof that a particular product will produce a meaningful result for you.

And the presence of an FDA disclaimer does not mean FDA has approved the product.

Dietary supplements are regulated differently from drugs. FDA does not generally approve dietary supplements for safety and effectiveness before they are marketed in the way it approves drugs.

So when I see a strong claim on a label, my next question is:

What evidence supports it?

7. Look for Quality Information—but Know What It Can Prove

A supplement label may display a seal from an independent quality-testing organization.

Examples of organizations that conduct supplement quality testing include:

  • NSF
  • U.S. Pharmacopeia (USP)
  • ConsumerLab

Different organizations use different programs and standards.

According to the NIH Office of Dietary Supplements, quality-assurance seals can provide additional confidence that a product was properly manufactured, contains the ingredients listed on the label and does not contain harmful levels of certain contaminants.

But here is the part people often miss:

A quality seal does not prove that the supplement is safe or effective for you.

Quality testing and clinical efficacy are different questions.

A product can be:

accurately manufactured

without being:

proven to accomplish every marketing promise made about it.

That is why I separate:

"Is this product what the label says it is?"

from:

"Is there good evidence that this formula does what I want it to do?"

Both questions matter.

One More Tool I Really Like

Sometimes you want to compare what is actually written on supplement labels without standing in a store turning bottles around.

The NIH Office of Dietary Supplements maintains the:

Dietary Supplement Label Database — DSLD

It contains current and historical label information from dietary supplements marketed in the United States.

You can search by:

  • product
  • brand
  • ingredient
  • label statements and claims
  • supplement type

Important: being listed in the DSLD does not mean NIH or FDA approves, verifies, recommends or endorses the product. The database catalogs label information supplied by manufacturers and distributors.

I do not decide whether I like a supplement from the front of the bottle.

I turn it around.

I want to know:

What am I taking?

How much am I getting?

What else is in it?

What claims are being made?

What evidence supports those claims?

And what do I know about the quality of the product?

You do not have to become a supplement scientist.

But learning to ask better questions makes you a much smarter consumer.

And once you understand the label, flashy marketing gets a lot less powerful.

The Bottom Line

Before buying a supplement, check these seven things:

  1. Serving size
  2. Actual amount
  3. % Daily Value
  4. Proprietary blends
  5. Other ingredients
  6. Claims versus evidence
  7. Quality/testing information

The label will not answer every question.

But it gives you a much better place to start than the marketing on the front.

Turn the bottle around.

Then get curious.
